Bone Cancer Symptoms

By Andy

Bone cancer is a rare disease that affects both children and adults. In 2008, approximately 2,400 new cases of primary bone cancers were diagnosed in the United States, and about 50% of these bone cancer patients died from this disease.

The tumors may start in the bone (primary cancer) or may start in another part of the body and spread to the bone (secondary cancer). There are several different types of primary bone cancer and all of them are rare. The most common bone tumors include osteosarcoma, ewing’s sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, fibrosarcoma, and chordoma. Osteosarcome: the most common type of primary bone cancer develops in new tissues of growing bones, particularly the knees, upper legs, upper arms. In secondary or metastatic bone cancer, the cancer originates in a different place but spreads (metastasizes) to the bones.

In most cases, the cause for bone cancer is unknown and the disease often occurs in patients who do not have identifiable risk factors. Bone cancer is discovered incidentally when an x-ray is taken after an accident for example or occasionally when the bone breaks due to weakness caused by the cancer. It is found most often in the arms and legs, but it can occur in any bone in the body.

Pain is the most frequent symptom of primary and metastatic cancer in bone. The main signs and symptoms of bone cancer in adults are: Pain in the bones or joints that often worsens during the night, there may also be fatigue, fever, or unexplained weight loss.  Bone pain may be hard to differentiate from ordinary low back pain or arthritis. Other symptoms may vary depending on the location and size of the cancer.

Primary bone cancer, which arises directly in the bone (usually in the leg), is relatively rare and generally strikes people under the age of 20. Bone cancer is usually diagnosed about three months after symptoms first appear. However, in most cases, this suspicion must be confirmed by examination of a tissue or cell sample under a microscope. A biopsy is done to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment for primary bone cancer can include chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, or a combination of treatments. Surgery is often the main treatment for bone cancer. Bone surgery as a means of strengthening bones, splinting and correcting alignment might be necessary.

Cesium chloride, being a mineral-based treatment, can help protect the bones.
